Compost & Fertilizer

Composting is a process that breaks down organic materials into nutrient-rich compost. Compost can be used as a fertilizer to improve soil health and plant growth.

How it works:

  • Materials: Food scraps, leaves, and grass clippings are mixed together in a compost pile.
  • Microorganisms: Microorganisms break down the materials using oxygen, carbon, and nitrogen.
  • Temperature: The pile heats up as the materials decompose.
  • Aeration: The pile needs to be aerated to allow oxygen to reach the microorganisms.
  • Moisture: The pile needs to be moist to keep the microorganisms working.

Benefits of composting :

  • Reduces waste
  • Helps with stormwater management
  • Reduces soil erosion
  • Conserves water
  • Combats climate change
  • Improves soil health
  • Reduces methane pollution

When it’s ready:

Compost is ready when it’s a rich brown color, crumbly, and has cooled. The time it takes to decompose depends on the materials, the pile size, and how often it’s turned.
