Our first rule is “If you name it, you feed it and clean after it.” This seems to work well. We are all human and none of us are perfect. Including growing and learning children.
Laugh and smile when your kids drop the eggs! This will happen so know ahead and do not get upset. Chickens love raw eggs and so do dogs. It doesn’t have to be wasted.
Give your kids their own area to dig. Every child I have met loves to dig in the dirt. I always appreciate it when someone else is willing to help me dig the big, deep whole I need to plant my tree, plant or seeds in. Show your kids how to loosen the soil and enjoy the earth. Give kids their own gloves and own tools. This helps them also learn how to put things away. This was a huge plus when we did this!
(Our son loves to go outside and break the ice up in the water troughs in the winter and has his own tool to do so. He even asks if he can go out and do it.)
When kids are involved, this teaches them at a young age how to grow into being efficient with outdoor chores. This also teaches them how to love the food that they helped grow and encourages them to waste less.
I always try to plant extras but especially when kids, dogs, chickens and goats are involved. Someone is going to step on the plant or tear it out of the ground. Just know ahead of time this is going to happen, so you do not become upset and frustrated when it does.
